The PhD candidate Filip Petronijević published a manuscript in the World Mycotoxin Journal titled “Optimised production and purification of ochratoxin A for toxicological and analytical applications”. This publication represents the first official scientific output of the BIOTOXDoc doctoral network and was carried out at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). The study presents a reproducible workflow for the efficient biosynthesis and high-purity purification of ochratoxin A, providing a robust basis for toxicological studies and future stable isotope-labelling experiments. The PhD candidate Darina Balková published a manuscript in Environmental Research Letters titled “Predicting aflatoxin risk with seasonal meteorological forecast”. This publication builds on collaboration with PhD candidate Richa Raj initiated during her BIOTOXDoc secondment at Institute of Meteorology and Climatology, BOKU (Vienna). The study presents a new approach to support early-season predictions of aflatoxin risk in maize using seasonal meteorological forecasts. A study by the group of Luis Botana (USC) investigating the effect of okadaic acid on human and mouse epithelial cells was published in Archives of Toxicology. The paper “Okadaic acid triggers NFκB and STAT3 phosphorylation followed by a release of inflammatory markers in human and mouse endothelial cells” by Klara Nybäck, Amparo Alfonso et al. shows that OA elicits the activation of the inflammatory cascade in both cell types, but suggests that human cells are more sensitve to OA than mouse cells. Filip Petronijevic from BOKU University published his second paper in the World Mycotoxin Journal. The article describes a low-cost and efficient method to produce and purify high amounts of uniformly 13C-labelled Ochratoxin A in-house prepared 13C-labelled yeast extract from 13C-glucose to be used as an internal standard in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses and as a tracer for metabolic studies. The PhD candidate Maria Paula Gómez Román from CIIMAR published a manuscript in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences titledFunctional and evolutionary insights of NR1J1 nuclear receptors: a diversified sensing weapon in bivalves”. The study underscores bivalve NR1J1 receptors as a functionally diversified chemical-sensing system rather than a uniform xenobiotic sensor and provides a framework for future studies addressing ligand-dependent regulation and detoxification-related pathways. Maria Paula Gómez Román also contributed to the article entitled “Effects of okadaic acid and phytoplankton ingestion on nr1j1, cyp, and abcb1 gene expression in Mytilus galloprovincialis” published in Marine Environmental Research. The article provides new insights into the effects of feeding and quality of the diet in expression of nr1j1 nuclear receptors and other detoxification-related genes, demonstrating the importance of diet as drivers for the activation of xenobiotic detoxification pathways in bivalves.
